Argentine President Javier Milei has banned the entry of—and authorized the expulsion of—foreigners who have insulted Argentines. The far-right leader implemented this measure through a “necessity and urgency” decree published this Thursday in the Official Gazette. The move comes amidst lingering echoes of what Milei has repeatedly described as an “anti-Argentine campaign” orchestrated during the World Cup by the governments of Brazil and Mexico, alongside the U.S. Democratic Party.
The presidential decree has faced sharp criticism from legal experts, social leaders, and politicians. Many pointed out that if a similar rule were in place elsewhere, Milei himself would be barred from entering numerous countries whose governments, citizens, or cultures he has disparaged and insulted.
“Anyone who attacks the Argentine Republic is not welcome in our country,” was the statement used by the government to announce the decree. The measure amends immigration law, introducing new grounds for denying foreign nationals entry into the country and revoking previously granted residency permits.
This decision is part of an increasingly restrictive and regressive regime for immigrants being implemented by the far-right government, mirroring policies designed by Donald Trump in the United States.
