The mayor of Pisaflores, Hidalgo, Miguel Bahena Solorzano, was assassinated Monday night during an armed attack in the community of La Estancia, located next to the municipal seat.
According to La Jornada Hidalgo, the official was shot at least five times when two men riding a white motorcycle shot him and fled the scene.
The city council itself confirmed that Miguel Bahena was no longer showing vital signs when he arrived at a private clinic where he was treated.
State and Municipal Police officers implemented an operation in different parts of Pisaflores, patrolling rural roads and communities to close off possible escape routes and locate those responsible, according to Criterio Hidalgo. The deployment of security forces also extended to neighboring towns in the Sierra Gorda.
Following the attack, personnel from the Hidalgo State Attorney General’s Office (PGJEH) moved to the area to conduct investigations and secure the area in order to investigate the crime.
On Monday night, the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), to which the mayor belonged, issued a statement demanding justice and expressing its deep dismay at the murder.
“We cannot allow violence to continue undermining democracy and the security of communities,” declared the PVEM National Executive Committee.
This position was supported by the state leader in Hidalgo, Avelino Tovar Iglesias, who demanded an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation to clarify the events and punish those responsible.
“We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire people of Pisaflores in this painful moment, and we raise our voices to demand justice. From the National Executive Committee, we firmly and urgently call on the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation that will lead to the clarification of the facts and the arrest and punishment of those responsible for this regrettable crime,” the statement reads.
