With drums, conch shells sounding like war drums, green and purple scarves around their necks or wrists, and signs with names and demands, more than 120,000 women took to the streets yesterday, marching from Paseo de la Reforma to the Zócalo, to demand justice, denounce violence, and defend their rights.
The figure was released by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, who added that the day ended peacefully. However, she indicated that at the end of the march, a group, mostly composed of men, vandalized one of the government buildings.
In response, police seized various dangerous objects such as bottles of alcohol, aerosols, and hammers.
The protesters’ gathering began at 12 noon, where girls, mothers searching for their missing children, and senior citizens came together to defend their rights, demand justice for femicide cases and sexist attacks, call for a larger public budget to combat gender violence, strengthen shelters for victims, establish specialized prosecutors’ offices, and update the mechanisms for searching for missing persons.
