Every September, it’s inevitable to remember the natural disasters that caused tragedy and horror among the Mexican population. September 19th is a date that brings to mind two earthquakes that forever changed Mexico.
The first, measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale, caused severe damage, especially in the country’s capital, the then Federal District, now Mexico City. Curiously, also on September 19th, but in 2017, another earthquake, this one measuring 7.1, caused significant damage to the city and hundreds of deaths.
Because of these earthquakes, every September 19th, a national drill is held in Mexico with the participation of government and private institutions; around this date, preventive actions are also usually promoted among the population in various settings.
In this regard, it is important to remember that Mexico is one of the most seismicly active countries in the world due to its geological context, which, among other things, is characterized by the interaction of five tectonic plates: the North American, Pacific, Cocos, Rivera, and Caribbean plates.
