An incident that has sparked widespread consternation in Mexicali, Baja California, occurred in the La Rioja subdivision, where a three-year-old boy—identified as Vicente—died after remaining confined inside a vehicle for more than 12 hours under extreme weather conditions.
According to preliminary reports, the child was left in his car seat on the night of Friday, May 1, and was not discovered until noon on Saturday, May 2. Initial investigations indicate that Roxana Ibarra, 40—the child’s mother, who held legal custody—arrived home intoxicated and fell asleep, forgetting the three-year-old boy in the SUV. Consequently, the child died from heatstroke and burns to his extremities.
The Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) confirmed, following the mandatory autopsy, that the cause of death was heatstroke.
The institution’s director, César González Vaca, detailed that Vicente’s body exhibited third-degree burns on his arms and forearms, resulting from prolonged exposure to the intense heat generated inside the vehicle’s cabin.
Specialists warn that in cities like Mexicali, the interior of a closed car can easily exceed 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), becoming a deadly environment for a child in a matter of minutes.
The tragedy has escalated into a matter of public outcry following statements made by Vicente’s father. Through social media, the father revealed that he was in the midst of a legal battle to regain full parental custody. He alleged that a judge had ruled that the child should remain with the mother without first conducting psychological evaluations—despite the fact that the woman’s negligence and alcohol consumption were recurring issues. The father expressed his profound grief and his fear that the person responsible could regain her freedom within 48 hours due to loopholes in the legal process, while the community and various advocacy groups are demanding a rigorous investigation that takes into account the reports of negligence filed prior to this tragedy.
