The mayor of Tenancingo, Nancy Nápoles Pacheco, was charged with the alleged crime of faking a kidnapping, in a case that has generated significant political and legal controversy in the State of Mexico.
The initial hearing for the formal charges was held after the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office compiled an investigation file alleging that the mayor’s supposed kidnapping was planned to extort money and justify a suspected shortfall of 40 million pesos in the Tenancingo City Council’s finances.
However, the mayor categorically denied the accusations and asserted that she was indeed the victim of a kidnapping, also denying any embezzlement within the municipal administration.
At the request of Nancy Nápoles Pacheco’s defense, the judge presiding over the criminal case ruled that the initial hearing would be held privately, barring public and media access.
Only the mayor herself attended the court proceedings. José Roberto “N”, her husband, and Cristian “N”, her brother-in-law, failed to appear before the judicial authority. As a result of their absence, both were declared fugitives and are currently being investigated.
