Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda confirmed that she is in the process of divorce from Carlos Torres Torres, former federal deputy and former PAN candidate for mayor of Tijuana.
During her Wednesday morning press conference, she briefly addressed the issue.
“We are in the process of divorce. I greatly respect Carlos. He is a great man, a great father, and we are doing it with great love and respect,” the governor stated.
On May 10, her husband announced via social media that his visa to enter the United States had been revoked, without explaining the reason. Hours later, the governor did so.
Since then, Torres Torres has stopped appearing at public events and resigned from his honorary positions in the state government and three city councils.
The reasons for the revocation of both visas are unknown, although the politician wrote at the time that what had happened to him had affected the governor.
Visa revocation impacted those around him
Ávila Olmeda attributed the incident to a “situation” faced by her husband, which, she said, has impacted those around her due to their shared life.
In a public statement, the governor noted that this is an episode framed within a complex binational context that demands composure, and affirmed that she will continue to exercise her duties firmly.
“I have said repeatedly, governing my state is a source of pride, and I will continue to do so with my heart foremost, with my conscience clear. My government will continue working tirelessly to address the challenges we face for the benefit of the people of Baja California,” she said on social media.
She also expressed her personal, moral, and political support for Torres Torres.
