The justice system in the State of Mexico has issued a landmark ruling: María Elena Martínez Robles, former mayor of Amanalco, State of Mexico, has been found guilty of the executions of councilman Miguel Ángel Lara and his bodyguard, crimes that occurred in January 2023.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) determined that the former official ordered the double execution of members of the La Familia Michoacana criminal group in order to maintain absolute control over municipal decisions and administration.

The crime occurred on January 25, 2023. The FGJEM investigation established that Martínez Robles, in her capacity as the superior officer, used her position to intentionally send the councilman and his bodyguard to an area classified as high-risk and dominated by criminal groups.

“The trustee and his bodyguard were sent to an area considered high-risk, controlled by criminal groups with a presence in the region, and they did not return alive,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.

After exhaustive investigations, the FGJEM (Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico) established Martínez Robles’ full responsibility for the crime of aggravated homicide against both victims.

The authorities reported that the legal process will conclude next Tuesday, December 16, with the sentencing hearing, where the prison term for the former mayor will be determined.
