Last February 14th, Gringo Gazette reported about the proposal for a nudist beach in Los Cabos initiated by Hector Martinez, a well-known Mexican nudist and advocate for body freedom. At the time, the Tourism Department rejected the request, arguing that it lacked the authority to make this declaration and that only federal agencies were competent to do so. However, it seems the subject is still alive.
Due to the influx of visitors in the last two months due to spring break and Holy Week, it appears that ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone) took the opportunity to conduct a survey, as nudist beaches have generated interest, particularly in the European market. According to Rafel Álvarez, head of this office, with 140,000 bathers visiting the beaches of Los Cabos and a sizable percentage being residents, surveys were conducted to gauge the opinions of Los Cabos people.
The responses from those interviewed showed a preference for nudist beaches in the north or East Cape, rather than in more touristy areas. “These results will be presented to the city council for deliberation, as 8,500 responses already provide an interesting indicator,” said Alvarez. He assured that after thoroughly analyzing the results, they would release further details about the surveys conducted.
Privately, some adults-only resorts in Mexico offer topless or clothing-optional zones. However, it’s best to ask the concierge or front desk before running naked on the beach, as public nudity or topless sunbathing in Mexico is illegal, so you would be breaking the law. If approached by police while in a state of undress, there is no benefit in claiming harassment or blaming the situation on a corrupt official seeking a bribe; you will be correctly and legally cited.
