“Let Mexicans feel safe at the Leagues Cup”

The Leagues Cup kicks off this Tuesday in the United States with the goal of intensifying the rivalry between the Liga MX and Major League Soccer teams. However, the organization is not blind to the fear many Mexicans are experiencing in that country due to immigration policy, and is therefore asking them to attend the stadiums with peace of mind, as it is their responsibility to ensure their safety.

The Gold Cup, in which the Mexican national team participated, was recently played, as was the Club World Cup, attended by Monterrey and Pachuca; there were no problems at all during those teams’ matches.

On the sporting front, the tournament is back with a renewed spirit. This time, Liga MX won’t be shut down for weeks; instead, the first three matches of the regular season will be played in a single week, from July 29 to August 7. After that, the competition will resume on August 19 for the quarterfinals.

“During previous editions, we identified areas of opportunity, areas for improvement with respect to the tournament, and we developed a new format, in which we enhanced the rivalry between Mexico and the United States at the club level. We understand that there is a rivalry at the national team level, and at the club level, it has been growing. We have guaranteed at least 58 matchups between Liga MX and MLS. We learned that what fans want is to see the rivalry between the two leagues, and this new format enhances that rivalry. Additionally, with the new format, the schedule was set up differently,” said Víctor Guevara, vice president of competition for the Leagues Cup, in an interview.
