Servando Gómez Martínez, known as “La Tuta,” was transferred this Thursday to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, where Rafael Caro Quintero, founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, are also being held.

His next hearing is scheduled for October 23. “La Tuta” is among the 26 criminals the government handed over to the United States on August 12.

Following his extradition, Gómez Martínez had a preliminary appearance before the court on August 13, the purpose of which was for the judge to verify the conditions of his confinement and formally initiate the judicial proceedings against him.

The 59-year-old former leader of the Familia Michoacana and Los Caballeros Templarios will remain in the prison at least until the initial hearing in the Southern District Court of New York, under the jurisdiction of Judge Henry J. Ricardo.

US authorities accuse the alleged kingpin of trafficking large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamines to the United States. “La Tuta” faces a possible life sentence if convicted, as the Mexican government reported that the United States has pledged not to seek the death penalty for any of the men surrendered.

It should be noted that Caro Quintero was extradited in February as part of the first rendition of drug traffickers to the United States. In his case, US authorities also ruled out seeking the death penalty.
