17 murders of elderly women in Mexico City gave Juana Barraza Samperio the nickname “La Mataviejitas” (The Old Lady Killer). Not only that, she is also considered one of the first serial killers in modern times in our country. Sentenced to 759 years in prison for these crimes, her case also marks the longest sentence in Mexican history.
A former wrestler, “La Mataviejitas” (The Old Lady Killer) is one of the characters who became part of the popular spectrum in our country, also developing myths surrounding her. The way she murdered her victims and the reason she became one of the most wanted in the country made her a feared figure, even among the inmates who share her with her at the Santa Martha Acatitla Women’s Social Reintegration Center.
Recently, a former inmate at this facility shared a previously unpublished photo on her Instagram account, responding to a follower’s question about whether Barraza Samperio’s presence scared her. This is how she responded about her time with “La Mataviejitas” in prison.
Instagram user @reasdeturquesa, who was previously incarcerated at Santa Martha Acatitla, the same prison where “La Mataviejitas” is serving her sentence, answered questions from her followers in a recurring thread on this social platform. One of those questions focused on her time with the serial killer.
“Is Juana killing old women scary?” is the question posed to this user named Fernanda, who responded based on her time with “La Mataviejitas.”
