The murder of Rafael Tirado Lizárraga—a fruit industry entrepreneur in Mazatlán, Sinaloa—marks the latest in a series of attacks that, over the span of six months, has left at least nine business leaders in Mexico as victims of kidnapping or murder.
Violence directed at figures within the private sector has spread across key regions of the country—from Sinaloa to Veracruz—triggering alarm and demands for action from business chambers.
The National Chamber of the Manufacturing Industry (Canacintra) condemned the most recent crime—which occurred on the eve of Holy Week—and called upon authorities to bolster security.
“Security is a fundamental pillar of economic and social development. Without it, not only is the personal safety of individuals compromised, but the stability of our communities is undermined as well,” the organization stated in a social media release.
