A gang that used the dating app Tinder to trick victims and then demand large sums of money was dismantled by members of the Mexico City Police.
Two of the six individuals arrested in this investigation were active members of the Citizen Security Secretariat, who helped intimidate the victims into carrying out the crime.
“According to the investigation, a man met a woman through Tinder. After going with her to a bar in the Narvarte neighborhood and then to a hotel, he was intercepted by two SSC police officers and two men posing as the woman’s relatives.
“Under the threat of accusing him of rape, they allegedly deprived him of his liberty, demanded money, and stole his vehicle,” the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office explained in an informational bulletin.
According to the agency, this would not be the first time this gang used a similar method to commit their crimes, as three of its members were already under investigation.
“It was identified that three of the people likely linked to these events had been linked to prosecution in previous investigations for express kidnapping with a similar modus operandi,” it detailed.
