The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) rejected the first appeals filed by Grupo Elektra and TV Azteca, owned by Ricardo Salinas Pliego, which represent a debt of more than 40 billion pesos accumulated since 2008. Since there is no other recourse available in Mexico, he must pay.
In Thursday’s public session, the Court began its discussion of the appeals filed by Salinas Pliego at 11:04 a.m., rejecting the recusals he filed against Justices Lenia Batres Guadarrama and Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, stating that they were not legal. Salinas Pliego had argued that the justices had expressed their opinions before the vote on these matters, a claim rejected by the full Court.
Subsequently, the Court unanimously endorsed the draft opinion of Justice Arístides Rodríguez, which found that the appeal for review 544/2024 filed by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) was well-founded. This decision overturned the ruling issued by the then-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Norma Piña Hernández, who had admitted the direct appeal for review 6321/2024.
Thus, the Supreme Court dismissed the direct appeal for review 6321/2024, upholding the lower court’s ruling that orders Grupo Elektra to pay 33,306,476,349 pesos.
