Over a career spanning more than five decades, Los Tigres del Norte have released more than 50 albums, with hits including classics such as Contrabando y traición (Contraband and Traitor), La puerta negra (Black Door), and Jefe de jefes (Chief of Bosses). Their music has influenced several generations and popularized the norteño genre worldwide. Their achievements include multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, including recognition for Best Norteño Album and Best Regional Mexican Music Album. Additionally, they were inducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Culture and the Arts in Mexico.
Los Tigres del Norte are not only musicians, but also storytellers of the migrant experience and defenders of human rights, earning them respect and admiration beyond their music. And this is something they continue to reaffirm with their new EP, La Lotería, which contains five songs that address themes such as migration, justice, the fight against corruption, and hope in the midst of adversity. The title track, La Lotería, uses the metaphor of gambling to reflect on life’s uncertainties and inequalities, on luck and daily struggles.
“We are a group that has always been concerned with raising awareness and ensuring our community in the United States is involved in the growth and strengthening of what we are in this country. Through our songs, we can send that message of encouragement. The lottery was a topic we’ve been discussing for some time, but we hadn’t had the opportunity to address it. And now it’s very much in line with what’s happening with the deportations. We need to send that message, reach out and raise the flag for our people and say that whoever comes here does so because they want to contribute. We adhere to the rules of this country, we adapt to another language, to another society. We need, as migrants, to express what’s happening and how we feel about it, how we experience it. I think there are few artists who can send that message and who have the foundation to do so. And it needed to be said at this time.”, said Jorge Hernández.
Hernandez adds:
“When one person has a problem like the one we’re experiencing now, the rest of the family suffers. What we can tell them is to stay calm, not take risks, and behave as properly as we can until common sense comes. Los Tigres del Norte, through their songs, ask us to stay united, not to take risks, so we can survive all these problems. And hopefully, we have the opportunity to solve them so we can be legally in this country.”.
