Legendary boxer Julio César Chávez was interviewed at the Mexico City airport hours before it was reported that his son of the same name had been transferred from the United States to Mexico and taken to a prison in Hermosillo, Sonora.
The Junior was arrested on July 2 in Los Angeles, California, due to visa issues, and it later emerged that he has had an arrest warrant issued in Mexico since 2023 for organized crime and arms trafficking.
For nearly a month and a half, the whereabouts of the 39-year-old boxer was unknown until Tuesday, when it was announced that he was already in Mexican custody.
Chávez Sr. revealed that he has been in contact with his son, reiterated his innocence, and asked authorities to do their job properly while he was awaiting his transfer to Mexico.
“We trust the authorities, and when my son, if he ever arrives here (in Mexico), I hope the authorities do their job, but they do it well, because my son, with all due respect, is innocent of everything he’s accused of. There’s nothing wrong with that, do you understand? But we have to leave it to the authorities, let them act. We’re with our lawyers, but we’re calm because there’s nothing wrong with that.
“It’s incredible. My son doesn’t even realize it. If my son were guilty, he’d be worried. But on the contrary, he says, ‘Is all that about me, Dad?’ But as if I don’t belong to any cartel! My son doesn’t belong to any cartel. He doesn’t sell weapons or explosives or anything. He knows them like we all do, but that’s it,” he said in a rushed interview at the Mexico City airport.
