Julio César Chávez González confessed his fear of the city where he grew up, but the reason is far from the region’s insecurity; rather, it’s a personal issue that led him to move away from where his siblings and mother live.

During a conversation with Marco Antonio Barrera for the podcast Un Round Más, Julio César revealed the reason for his change of residence. He currently lives in Tijuana, Baja California. Despite his affection for Culiacán, he no longer wanted to return.

“I was born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. I will never deny the cross of my parish. I will die a Sonoran, but Culiacán definitely saw me grow up, saw me crowned world champion, and I have spent practically my entire life there,” the retired boxer recalled.

He stated that he moved after his time in rehabilitation. When he faced his addiction problem, he had to make many changes, including his residence. Although he frequently visits the city where he grew up, he will not return to live there.

“Afterwards, I came to live in Tijuana, but I still go to Culiacán every weekend to see my mother and my brothers. I go there, I train, I feel much more comfortable,” he added.

According to Julio César Chávez, he left Culiacán out of fear of relapsing into addiction. The friendships he made there led him to use harmful substances, so he preferred to stay in Tijuana and get away from those people.

“I stayed here for my recovery, because this is where I—through battling and battling with my damn fucking addiction—was able to overcome it, so I stayed here because I was afraid of Culiacán, you know, my friends, and thank God I feel like I’m from Tijuana,” he confessed.
