Julio César Chávez arrived at Mexico City Airport from Culiacán, Sinaloa, attempting to remain tight-lipped about his son’s arrest. He defended him by stating his innocence and expressing concern about the situation.
The former boxer refused to comment to the press in his public appearance one day after his firstborn’s arrest and indicated that the statement issued on behalf of his family is also his own statement regarding the incident.
“I already issued a statement. I can’t speak right now. I’m worried, but calm because my son is innocent. Everything will be fine, I can’t say more,” the boxing legend stated upon his reappearance.
Chávez was accompanied by individuals, apparently security personnel, who tried to quickly remove him to prevent him from making further statements. Julio César Chávez Jr. was detained by U.S. immigration agents because he was in the country illegally, as his tourist visa had expired last February, and he no longer had permission to be on U.S. soil.
Likewise, U.S. authorities indicated that Chávez Jr. has an arrest warrant in Mexico, and will therefore be handed over to authorities after his deportation.
The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the boxer has had an arrest warrant issued in Mexico since March 2023, accused of “organized crime and arms trafficking.”
