Retired federal judge based in the State of Mexico, Everardo Mara Arias, was found dead inside a vehicle in the community of Santa Cruz Cuauhtenco, in Zinacantepec, according to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM).
The body of Maya Arias, who had left office in December following the judicial reform, was found after noon with a gunshot wound to the head.
The white vehicle was located on a dirt road, a few meters from the community cemetery, where municipal and state police arrived.
The State Attorney General’s Office of Mexico began an investigation into the discovery of the former federal judge of the Third District in Amparo Matters.
The former federal judge was exposed in 2024 during the morning press conference for his involvement in high-profile cases, as well as for issuing a permanent suspension against Ovidio Guzmán López, known as “El Ratón,” son of El Chapo Guzmán, against an arrest warrant issued by a federal judge.
The injunction that halted the justified pretrial detention of José Luis Abarca, former mayor of Iguala, implicated in the Ayotzinapa case, was also filed.
The Prosecutor’s Office is pursuing several lines of investigation; however, one of the main ones is suicide, although the investigation will continue in the coming days.
Through social media, the Federal Judicial Council (CJF) mourned the death of the retired federal judge and sent condolences to his family and colleagues.
