Journalist Carlos Castro Shot Dead in Poza Rica, Veracruz

This Thursday, Carlos Castro, a journalist specializing in crime reporting for media outlets in northern Veracruz, was murdered.

The journalist was inside the TrogueBirria restaurant, owned by his parents, located on Avenida 20 de Noviembre in the Cazones neighborhood of Poza Rica, when he was shot.

Carlos Castro, 26, had previously worked for media outlets such as Vanguardia, Noreste, and La Opinión de Poza Rica, and was currently working for the news website Enfoque.

The crime triggered a large police response in the northern oil-producing municipality.

It is known that Carlos Castro had been under protection, which was withdrawn in 2024.

Journalists’ Commission Condemns Murder
In a statement, the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists (CEAPP) condemned the murder of Carlos Castro.

The CEAPP demanded a thorough investigation and clarification of the facts.

“The members of this Autonomous Body demand that the competent authorities conduct a thorough investigation of the case and bring those responsible to justice.

“The CEAPP deeply regrets these events that have brought grief to the northern part of the state and reiterates its commitment to the care, protection, and support of the journalistic community,” it stated.

It also expressed its condolences to the reporter’s family and friends, as well as to the journalistic community of Poza Rica and the surrounding region.
