Jesús Vargas, a commander with the Abasolo Municipal Police, was killed this Wednesday, June 10, in the municipality of Pénjamo, Guanajuato. The incident mobilized state and federal security forces and led to an operation being deployed in the community of Capilla de Márquez.

The victim was identified by family members and authorities as an operational commander within the Abasolo security force. The State Attorney General’s Office currently has an investigation open to clarify the circumstances of the homicide.

There are conflicting accounts regarding how the attack took place. Initial reports from local media indicated that Vargas was on his way to work on a motorcycle when he was intercepted by armed individuals who fired at him from another moving vehicle at the entrance to the Capilla de Márquez community.

According to that version, a call to the 911 emergency system around 9:00 a.m. reported a person wounded by gunfire. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers and Army personnel found a man dead next to a motorcycle.

However, other press reports indicate that the commander was attacked inside his home. According to that account, several armed men arrived at the residence and opened fire on him after he had allegedly finished his workday.
