Jesús Muñoz Arrives in Mexico from Sudan, Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder and Deported by the US

This Sunday afternoon, fellow Mexican national Jesús Muñoz Gutiérrez arrived in Mexico. He had been deported by the United States to South Sudan on May 20.

In the United States, Muñoz Gutiérrez was sentenced to life in prison for murder, but was later sent to that African country as part of a group of prisoners of different nationalities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that “consular personnel from the Embassy in Ethiopia and the Consulate in Frankfurt accompanied Muñoz Gutiérrez during his repatriation, and he was received today by Vanessa Calva, Director General of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning in Mexico City.”

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that after providing follow-up, assistance, and consular protection to Jesús Muñoz Gutiérrez, he arrived in Mexico City this afternoon from Juba, the capital of South Sudan. The Mexican national was arbitrarily deported from the United States to that country on May 20, after completing a 25-year sentence,” it said.

It detailed that on September 5, the Mexican ambassador to Ethiopia, Alejandro Estivil, traveled to that city to personally receive him and initiate his repatriation to Mexico.

“During these months, the Embassy, ​​in coordination with the General Directorate of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning and the General Directorate of Africa and the Middle East, maintained high-level communication with South Sudan to ensure that Muñoz Gutiérrez was safe and in good health and to monitor his immigration status. During this time, we maintained communication with his family to update them on the efforts being made for his safe return to Mexico,” the Foreign Ministry detailed.
