Mexican coach Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre, coach of the Mexican national soccer team, who has shown his closeness to Felipe Calderón Hinojosa in the past, declared himself “apolitical” this week when asked several times whether he supports the Mexican mobilizations in Los Angeles against the raids and the migrant hunt launched by the Donald Trump administration.

“I’m not a spokesperson for Mexicans; I’m the coach of the Mexican national team. I can send a message to all the Mexicans who watch us in the stadium, who watch us on television, that I hope we are worthy representatives of their country, in any situation and anywhere in the world,” said Aguirre before the match against Turkey as part of the Mexican national team’s preparations for the Gold Cup to be held in the United States.

The Mexican national team will, in fact, play this Saturday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, against the Dominican Republic in its Gold Cup debut. In fact, the national team will change its host hotel in Los Angeles for this first match due to “security concerns” stemming from protests against immigration raids in the Californian city, sources confirmed to ESPN. The Mexican national team, led by Javier Aguirre, is expected to stay in the Long Beach area to avoid any conflict in the downtown area. According to AP, CONCACAF has authorized the change to a yet-to-be-determined hotel.
