After decades in which Mexicans paid the affordable price of $6 for the I-94 permit, which allows travel of more than 25 miles from San Diego County for six months, the United States government has decided to raise its price five times the original.
The official notice from the Federal Register, responsible for publishing federal regulations, specifies that beginning September 30, 2025, the total fee for applying for Form I-94 at land ports will increase to $30 (the current $6 plus an additional $24 fee established by H.R. 1).
This measure is part of the legislative package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1), passed on July 4, 2025, which authorizes new immigration-related fees and establishes annual fee adjustments based on inflation.
“Practically, it’s to have more budget to strengthen the immigration issues on the current administration’s agenda. They’re $24 as of now, and these permits normally didn’t have a significant increase; now there will be an annual adjustment based on inflation,” he stated.
Plan Ahead
He recommended that the population plan ahead to pay for the permit and show up for the interview. In the case of international flights, he noted that airlines already include the cost.
In both cases, he emphasized the importance of proving the purpose of the trip, that is, demonstrating that they are tourists and that they will eventually return to Mexico.
On another topic, Carrasco commented that, with the federal government’s review of tourist visas, it’s possible that some citizens’ visas will be revoked.
He noted that, since the beginning of the year, authorities have been more strict when issuing visas, even reviewing social media.
