How many times has September 19th shaken in Mexico?

Written by Parriva — September 3, 2025

On September 19th, the Second National Drill 2025 will be held in all Mexican states, a date that has now become almost an omen of possible natural phenomena and catastrophes for Mexicans.

This fateful date, beyond reviving the memory of those unfortunate events that undoubtedly left their mark on the country’s history, has now become a symbol of collective panic, sowing confusion and uncertainty among Mexicans.

Hearing the seismic alert every September 19th has fostered the belief that September is the month of earthquakes. Since 1985, at least three earthquakes of great significance have been recorded during this month due to their magnitude, the damage caused, and, above all, the fact that they occurred on the same day.

How many times has September 19th shaken?

The first event etched in the collective memory of the Mexican population is the earthquake of September 19, 1985, with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale. With its epicenter off the coast of Michoacán, this quake affected much of the central and southern parts of the country, collapsing buildings and claiming the lives of at least 6,000 people, according to official figures.

Then, 32 years later, on September 19, 2017, this event was repeated, with a magnitude 7.1 earthquake with its epicenter between Puebla and Morelos. This tragedy not only left the country in shock, it also revealed the strength of Mexican resilience and solidarity, as hundreds of volunteers, rescuers, and citizens came together to help those affected.

Five years later, on September 19, 2022, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter off the coast of Coalcomán, Michoacán, alerted the population, rekindling the call to remain prepared and united in the face of any natural disaster.

Why does the earthquake occur on September 19?

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Seismological Service (SSN) have emphasized on numerous occasions that this phenomenon has nothing to do with the date, as these events are merely statistical coincidences and cannot be predicted based on a specific day.
