An armed attack on the afternoon of Friday, October 9, 2026, in the municipality of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional (in Oaxaca’s Costa region) left three men dead and one woman wounded. Among the fatalities was journalist Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, founder and director of the digital news outlet *Pinotepa Comunica*.
The attack took place around 4:00 PM in the Planta y Porvenir neighborhood—known locally as *Barrio La Planta*—when hitmen intercepted a vehicle and opened fire on its occupants.
The bodies of three men were found at the scene, while a woman wounded by gunfire was transported to a local hospital.
According to initial investigations by the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the primary target of the attack was an individual nicknamed “El Darío,” whom authorities have linked to criminal activities in the Costa region.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that Huesca Manzano—who worked as a taxi driver alongside his journalism career—had arrived at the location in his cab to provide transport services to this individual (a local criminal boss) when the gunmen launched the attack.
Although the initial official hypothesis does not directly link the crime to Huesca Manzano’s journalistic work, prosecutors will keep the investigation files open to determine liability, establish the motive, and identify the perpetrators.
This incident marks the second homicide of a media worker in the state this semester, following the execution of Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar on July 22 in San Pablo Etla. Agents from the State Investigation Agency (AEI) and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) processed the crime scene to collect spent shell casings and ballistic evidence.
