Hearing for Joaquín Guzmán López, son of “El Chapo,” postponed again in the US

Joaquín Guzmán López, former leader of the Los Chapitos criminal cell, the criminal network made up of the sons of Joaquín Guzmán López, El Chapo, had another change in the date for his next hearing before the judge handling his criminal case in Chicago, Illinois.

His next appearance was changed from September 15 to November 13 of this year.

The Mexican, nicknamed “El Güero,” faces several charges for drug trafficking, organized crime, money laundering, and firearms use in the Northern Illinois District Court, with Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman presiding over the proceedings.

Joaquín Guzmán López is currently negotiating a plea agreement with the Department of Justice that would allow him to receive prison benefits and a reduction in his criminal sentence in exchange for not going to trial.

The deal would also allow him to become a witness or informant for Washington, which would give him even more leverage to avoid a possible life sentence.

He is also accused of having participated in the events that led to his and the founder and former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael Zambada García, known as El Mayo, being captured by the United States at the end of July 2024.

It is expected that the next hearing El Güero will attend will be one in which he will formally plead guilty before Judge Johnson Coleman.
