The sexist message that ‘Chicharito’ Hernández launched and that outraged: “Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Javier Chicharito Hernández’s comments about women after he made misogynistic comments in a series of videos, such as stating that women’s place is in the home, and questioned other behaviors toward men, according to the soccer player.
“He’s a good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion about women, he has a lot to learn,” said the president, who asserted that women can be whatever they want and that it’s a matter of equality. “It’s already in the Constitution; it’s called substantive equality,” she emphasized.
Sheinbaum explained that women have their own characteristics, and this is simply a matter of equality, so the idea that women’s role is to be at home is simply a “very sexist idea.”
“That idea that women’s role is to be at home, well, of course we love our families and we like being with our husbands, but women have everything they need to develop, and for that, they also have to develop the conditions, but this idea is a very sexist one,” she stated.
“Angela Davis, an American civil rights activist and feminist, said that being a feminist means recognizing women as people, so profoundly and simply, and that’s the idea,” she commented.
