Guatemalan Mayor Killed During Christmas Parade

Nelson Luciano Marroquín, mayor of the town of Masagua in southern Guatemala, was shot and killed on the evening of December 6 while participating in a Christmas parade in his community.

The 38-year-old politician, a member of the Vamos party, was walking around 7:50 p.m. with his wife, greeting residents, when he was attacked by unknown assailants. One of his bodyguards was also wounded in the attack.

The mayor was transported in critical condition by the Municipal Departmental Firefighters to the National Hospital of Escuintla, where he died upon arrival in the emergency room, according to local media reports. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.

The Municipal Prosecutor’s Office of Puerto San José, which is in charge of the investigation, reported that three shell casings and a bullet were found at the crime scene for ballistic analysis by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences. Additionally, special security measures have been implemented for the politician’s funeral.
