The defense team for Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, has requested an in-person hearing before a US federal court to present arguments for his appeal, which seeks to overturn his 2024 drug trafficking conviction.
The request includes eleven possible dates for the hearing, which would be held before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals between May and August of this year, according to information revealed by Milenio.
The defense maintains that the trial was marred by irregularities that tainted the process, while the US prosecution rejects these claims and defends the initial sentence.
Attorney César de Castro argued in documents submitted to the court that evidence favorable to the defendant was concealed, at least four witnesses gave false testimony, and information about the former official’s assets was introduced that, in his opinion, should not have been considered by the jury.
