García Harfuch: 1,500 detained and 3,000 weapons seized in Sinaloa

The head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, reported that from October 1, 2024, to July 16, nearly 1,500 people were arrested in Sinaloa and 3,000 firearms were seized, equivalent to more than 20 percent of the total weapons seized in the country during that period.

This comes after boasting that, after two months of increased violence in the state, it has stabilized in July.

“We had five consecutive months of decline in violent incidents and homicides. During that time—and these figures can be seen—all high-impact crimes were decreasing.

“In May and June, there was an upswing, which is when the armed forces implemented a second reinforcement, and July has stabilized again,” he emphasized at a press conference in Culiacán.

The secretary also highlighted that more than a ton of fentanyl and one million pills of the same synthetic opioid have been seized.

Five days before the one-year anniversary of the surrender of drug lord Ismael El Mayo Zambada to the United States by Joaquín Guzmán López—son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán—the official emphasized that thanks to the actions taken, the structure of the Sinaloa cartel has been weakened, which began an internal dispute after that event.

According to García Harfuch, since the beginning of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, the presence of members of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) and the SSPC has gradually increased.

He emphasized that the deployment of specialized teams has allowed for the collection of intelligence to conduct investigations and monitoring, with the goal of dismantling criminal networks and arresting perpetrators of violence.

“Criminal organizations have definitely been weakened. At the beginning of the conflict (within the Sinaloa cartel), we saw convoys of trucks here in Culiacán. Today, we haven’t seen any of that. They are becoming less frequent, and there have even been months with no roadblocks.

“That doesn’t mean the situation is resolved; what we are saying is that these criminal groups don’t have the same firepower they had at the beginning,” he commented.
