What began as a night of celebration over the Mexican National Team’s victory ended in a scene of chaos and despair in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, after a driver—allegedly intoxicated—plowed into a crowd celebrating in one of the tourist destination’s busiest areas.

The incident occurred Wednesday night at the intersection of Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard (also known as Paseo de la Marina) and Ignacio Zaragoza Avenue, in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Hundreds of fans had gathered there to celebrate the “Tricolor’s” victory in the 2026 World Cup.

According to official reports, a black Volkswagen Jetta was moving through the traffic congestion caused by the celebrations.

The driver became enraged by the presence of people on the roadway who attempted to shake his vehicle. According to statements gathered by authorities, the man tried to force his way through the crowd, even though entire families—including children and teenagers—were present.

The situation escalated when some fans began hitting the vehicle and throwing various objects at it to block its path. Minutes later, the driver suddenly accelerated and rammed into dozens of people standing on the avenue.
