Former Mayor Sandra Cuevas Vanishes, Boasting of Money, Jewelry, and Political Influence

Sandra Cuevas is a woman of many faces and masks. She was an Obrador supporter, a Monreal supporter, a PRI-Rann supporter, a member of the Nationalist Workers’ Party (Mécista), a businesswoman, and, in her latest role, she boasted of working on her doctoral thesis, owning an art gallery, and leading a luxurious life, in which she has reportedly owned millions of dollars in artwork.

The woman of all colors and all voices is silent today. A few days ago, she disappeared from the public eye and deleted all her social media accounts. The reason? It is unknown, but it occurs alongside questions about her assets.

Sandra Xantall Cuevas Nieves, Mayor of Cuauhtémoc, the political and cultural heart of Mexico City (CdMx), from 2021 to 2024, can be defined as a chameleon-like politician.

To climb the ladder, in her early days in politics, she was a supporter of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and although her posts are no longer available, on August 19, 2018, she wrote on her Twitter account: “Present at the 5th Extraordinary National Congress of Morena; listening carefully to our president-elect Andrés Manuel @lopezobrador_.”

During those months, Cuevas was doing field work in the Azcapotzalco mayor’s office, where she sought to be the Morena candidate. When she failed to win, she changed parties and became the PRD candidate, albeit with the full support of the PRI-PAN alliance. That year, Cuevas made significant inroads against the ruling party in the Mexican capital, one of them being Cuevas’s victory in the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office in June 2021. Although here, Ricardo Monreal allegedly worked in favor of Sandra and against the Morena candidate, Dolores Padierna, despite being from the same movement.
