Five months before the end of 2025, the number of foreigner arrests by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Mexico City increased by 95.45 percent, with 86 arrests recorded as of July 13 of this year, one less than in all of 2024.
Through information obtained by MILENIO via Transparency, the Undersecretariat of Police Intelligence and Investigation of the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that of the 86 arrests, 54 were for “violent robbery of pedestrians in public spaces.”
What types of robbery are recorded?
This crime has the highest incidence, with 62.79 percent, surpassing last year’s 24.14 percent with 21 arrests, which was the most frequent crime against foreigners in 2024.
“Business robbery with violence” is the second most reported, with 12 arrests, followed by six arrests for “robbery of passengers on the subway without violence” and five for “intentional injuries by firearm.”
The list also includes crimes such as “robbery of pedestrians on public roads without violence” and “vehicle robbery with violence.”
Detainees, mostly from Venezuela
Regarding the nationality of those arrested, 65 are originally from Venezuela, eight from Colombia, four from Afghanistan, three from Honduras, two from Cuba, and one person per country in the case of Andorra, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and El Salvador.
It’s important to note that the figures reached this year in just seven months also exceed those recorded in the same period in 2022 and 2023, with 56 and 48 arrests, respectively.
