At the instruction of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) summoned US Ambassador Ronald Johnson to discuss the attack on four boats in the Pacific Ocean, near Mexican waters, with Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and Navy Secretary Raymundo Pedro Morales. The attack resulted in the deaths of 14 people.

It was also reported that the Mexican Navy is conducting an operation with two ships, searching for a survivor 830 kilometers off the coast of Acapulco.

Regarding the meeting with Johnson, the SRE stated on social media that “in a cordial atmosphere, the parties agreed that the main priority is safeguarding human life at sea, as well as fully respecting national sovereignty, reaffirming the commitment to understanding and cooperation that have historically characterized the relationship between both nations.”

She added that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Navy (Semar) reiterated their commitment to act with professionalism, dialogue, and institutional cooperation so that Mexico maintains a constructive, collaborative, and solid role in shared maritime security.”

The meeting took place after Mayor Sheinbaum requested more information about the recent attack on vessels that the United States links to drug trafficking and considers a security risk.

“It was an attack in international waters against vessels that were allegedly carrying drugs. It appears there was one survivor, and the Navy, for humanitarian reasons and in accordance with international treaties, decided to rescue that person…”
