Federal agents executed court-authorized search warrants Wednesday morning at the San Pedro home of Alberto Carvalho, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), as well as at district headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed the searches took place February 25, 2026. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice also confirmed a federal search was conducted. However, the affidavits supporting the warrants remain sealed, and officials have not disclosed the nature of the investigation.

At this stage, no charges have been announced.

The coordinated searches at both Carvalho’s private residence and LAUSD offices immediately raised questions across California’s largest school district, which serves more than 400,000 students — the majority Latino — and employs tens of thousands of teachers and staff.

In a brief statement, the FBI said it was conducting “court-authorized law enforcement activity.” Federal authorities declined to provide further details, citing an active investigation.

Carvalho, who previously led Miami-Dade County Public Schools before being hired by LAUSD in 2022, has been a high-profile education leader nationally. He has overseen major initiatives involving post-pandemic learning recovery, campus safety, and district budget stabilization.

Because the warrant materials are sealed, it remains unclear whether the investigation involves district operations, contracting, procurement, or other matters. Legal experts note that search warrants require a federal judge to determine there is probable cause that evidence of a potential crime may be found at the locations searched. A search, however, does not imply guilt.

The timing is significant. LAUSD is currently navigating ongoing budget pressures tied to declining enrollment and expiring federal pandemic relief funds. The district also manages billions in annual funding, including state and federal allocations.

Parents and educators are now seeking clarity.

Community advocates emphasize that transparency is essential, particularly in a district where Latino families represent the majority of students and where public trust is central to educational stability.

As of now, LAUSD had not issued a detailed public statement regarding the scope of the investigation.

This remains a developing story. Parriva will continue reporting as federal authorities release additional information.
