The United States has tightened its grip on the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), especially on the top operatives of its leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho.’

This Thursday, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) offered a reward of $250,000 for Carlos Andrés Rivera Varela, alias ‘La Firma,’ whom they identify as a participant in the attack on the head of the Public Security Secretariat, Omar García Harfuch, and the assassination of former Jalisco governor Aristóteles Sandoval.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $245,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Carlos Andres Rivera Varela, an alleged high-ranking leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a major transnational cartel and designated foreign terrorist organization. Carlos Rivera Varela was born on June 19, 1986, in Cali, Colombia, and currently also holds Mexican citizenship.

In March 2021, Rivera Varela’s accounts were frozen by the Financial Intelligence Unit, which also implicated him in the attacks against Omar García Harfuch, then Mexico City’s Secretary of Public Security, and former Governor Aristóteles Sandoval.
