This Thursday morning, family and friends of Leyla Monserrat, a teenager murdered by two minors, demonstrated outside the Judicial Branch courts and the Early Intervention Center in San Luis Río Colorado to demand justice following the sentence issued in March.

The demand focuses on imposing harsher sentences for minors who commit serious crimes.

Carmen Angélica Becerra Valencia, the young woman’s mother, asserted that the current justice system gives “too much preferential treatment to teenagers.”

“It’s not right. All I want is for justice to be served, for her to have received a proper trial, as she deserved for the crime, because there’s a video here, and you can’t do it blindly because there’s a video,” she stated.

Regarding cases of teenagers being victimized by other minors, Becerrera stated, “It is true that the law is the law because of their ages, but it’s time for a change.”

“How many cases are happening? How many teenagers are being killed and nothing happens, because the authorities themselves protect them because they have rights?” she declared after demanding justice from the authorities.

Leyla was murdered in September 2025, a victim of two young women she considered “friends,” who filmed a video that surfaced months later. Last March, the minors received a sentence of just under three years of confinement and were ordered to pay a fine of just over five thousand pesos for damages.
