Los Alegres del Barranco, authors of corridos in honor of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), are mentioned in one of the letters found by this newspaper in the Michoacán drug lord’s cabins in Tapalpa.

It is a handwritten letter dated August 7 of last year, in which the sender, whose name is not identified, reminds Oseguera Cervantes, “the thing about Güero Gallero and Los Alegres del Barranco is this month.”

In his own handwriting, the brief excerpt reads: “MY FRIEND, I’M REMINDING YOU ABOUT GÜERO GALLERO AND LOS ALEGRES DEL BARRANCO. IT’S THIS MONTH.”

For the past year, the Sinaloa-based group has been under scrutiny by authorities in the state of Jalisco after projecting images of “El Mencho” or “The Lord of the Roosters” during a performance at the Telmex Auditorium in Zapopan. As a result, the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation against the band and its representatives for inciting crime. They appeared before the local Public Prosecutor’s Office on several occasions.

However, a judge in the state of Jalisco suspended the criminal proceedings against the four members of the band, on the condition that they refrain from performing corridos (folk ballads) alluding to organized crime at their shows and carry out various community service projects.
