Iván ‘N’—known as ‘El Cromo’—will remain in pretrial detention. He is the leader of a criminal group called ‘Los Cromos,’ which is linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and is considered a primary source of violence in Oaxaca, particularly in Juchitán de Zaragoza and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region.

A federal judge ordered the precautionary measure of pretrial detention for ‘El Cromo’ while his legal status is determined. He has been charged for his alleged involvement in crimes related to the possession of firearms restricted for exclusive use by the armed forces, as well as drug-related offenses—specifically, possession with the intent to distribute—the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported.

Iván ‘N’ was arrested recently in Guadalajara, Jalisco, during an operation led by personnel from the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina-Armada de México, or Semar).

In this case, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) requested that he be formally bound over for trial. The defense for Iván ‘N’ requested an extension of the constitutional 72-hour deadline to 144 hours to allow for the determination of his legal status. While the detainee was initially held at an FGR facility, he has since been transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security prison.

The ‘Los Cromos’ organization is linked to homicides, extortion, the collection of ‘protection’ payments, kidnapping, and the trafficking of drugs and weapons. Furthermore, it has been alleged that the group received protection from—and maintained ties with—the mayor of Juchitán, Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, who has already been arrested and is currently facing legal proceedings initiated by state authorities. The former mayor—along with a man identified as “La Parka,” who allegedly served as his bodyguard and was a member of “Los Cromos”—has been formally charged, as both are suspected of committing the crimes of aggravated extortion and acts against state security.
