The United States justice system has Jesús Omar Ibarra Félix, alias El Chuta, in its sights on charges of terrorism, drug and arms trafficking, and providing material support to the Sinaloa Cartel.
For years, his name appeared in corridos and popular songs that presented him as one of the closest men to Los Chapitos, the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. Now, the federal indictment identifies him as an operative who broke that loyalty and ended up collaborating with his bosses’ former rival, Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, known as El Chapo Isidro.
In the world of regional Mexican music, El Chuta became a recurring figure. Various groups dedicated lyrics to him and his ties to Los Chapitos, especially to Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar. In 2024, the song “El Chuta” by Los Cedreños narrated the beginning of a war, and it includes the line: “They call him Chuta, and he’s one of Iván’s men.” The corrido warns about the rules of the territory: “I’ve put all my people in charge, no innocent person will pay the price, here, whoever dies is because they’re involved in something shady.”
