Mario Alberto Cárdenas Medina, alias “El Beto,” “El Betito,” or “El Betillo,” identified as the nephew of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, former leader of the Gulf Cartel, was arrested Sunday night in Monterrey, Nuevo León, during an operation by the State Police.
According to the National Registry of Detentions (RND), the State Police carried out the operation on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 7:09 p.m., on Lázaro Cárdenas Avenue, between Alfonso Reyes Avenue, in the 39 neighborhood of Monterrey.
During the operation, Cárdenas Medina was wearing a black t-shirt, jeans, and green sneakers. The nephew of “El Mata Amigos” was captured along with two other individuals, from whom firearms were seized, according to a post by journalist Michelle Rivera on her X account.
So far, authorities have not released the identities of the other two individuals apprehended, nor have they specified the type and quantity of weapons seized during the operation.
