US President Donald Trump announced this Saturday the imposition of 30% tariffs on products from Mexico and the European Union (EU).
The measure will take effect on August 1, according to two letters published on the Truth Social platform.
In his messages, Trump justified the tariffs on Mexico for its role in the entry of illegal drugs into the United States and decided to increase the tax by citing the “fentanyl crisis,” which he referred to as “caused in part by Mexico’s failure to stop the cartels, which are made up of the most despicable people to ever set foot on Earth.”
The President stated: “Mexico has helped me keep the border secure, BUT, what Mexico has done is not enough. Mexico has not yet stopped the cartels from turning all of North America into a drug playground. Clearly, I cannot let that happen.”
As of August 1, a general tariff of 30% will be in effect, with additional levies for certain economic sectors. Products that attempt to evade these taxes will be subject to even higher tariffs.
The President clarified that “there will be no tariffs if Mexico or its companies decide to build or manufacture products within the United States, and in fact, we will do everything possible to have this approved quickly, professionally, and routinely within weeks.”
The President then warned: “If Mexico decides to raise tariffs in response, whatever the increase, this amount will be added to the 30% US tariff.”
