Death toll from torrential rains in Querétaro, Puebla, Hidalgo, and Veracruz rises to 47

The death toll from the heavy rains concentrated in the center of the country has so far left 47 people dead in the states of Puebla, Querétaro, and Veracruz, where damage to buildings and streets has been reported, and injuries have been reported, according to the Government of Mexico.

In a joint statement, it detailed that as of 2:00 p.m. this Sunday, progress was being made in providing care to the population and in the restoration of infrastructure and basic services in the states of Veracruz, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, and Hidalgo following the rains of October 6-9.

According to the latest report from the National Coordination of Civil Protection, the deaths were recorded in Querétaro (one dead); Hidalgo (16); and 17 missing; Veracruz, with 18 missing, and 6 missing; and Puebla, with 12 and 15 missing, for which authorities have established the DNIII Plan to support the Armed Forces and federal security forces.

In addition, in Veracruz, 70 municipalities are reported to be affected, and more than 80 isolated localities require priority attention:

Espinal, Coyutla, Poza Rica, Cazones, Tihuatlán, Coatzintla, Álamo, Ixhuatlán de Madero, Benito Juárez, Tantoyuca, Tempoal, El Higo, Platón Sánchez, Chalma, Zontecomatlán, Ilamatlán, Texcatepec, Zacualpan, Huayacocotla, Benito Juárez, Tuxpan, Gutiérrez Zamora, and Tecolutla.

While in Puebla, 38 municipalities are reported affected, with 16,000 homes damaged, these are the priority areas.

Xicotepec, Naupan, Tlacuilotepec, Francisco Zeta Mena, Venustiano Carranza, Pahuatlán, Zihuateutla, Jalpan, Pantepec, Huauchinango, and Tlaxco.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum arrived from the state of Veracruz to set up the Permanent Command Center to assist the victims with the services they require. There, she assured them, “We will assist you all,” amid the desperation of the population who have lost their families or their homes.

For its part, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that it has restored power to 85 percent.
