Culiacán Could Be Among the 5 Most Violent Cities in the World Due to the Sinaloa Cartel War

The capital of Sinaloa could once again be among the five most violent cities in the world due to the high homicide rate recorded so far this year as a result of the internal war between the Pacific Cartel and the state, warned Miguel Calderón Quevedo, general coordinator of the State Public Security Council (CESP).

The official explained that the murder trend in Culiacán reflects a deterioration in security conditions since the drug war launched by the Sinaloa Cartel in September of last year, which would once again place the municipality in the international ranking of urban violence.

“It is very unfortunate that we are in the top 5 in the current forecast of the most violent cities in the world, due to the homicide rate that will surely lead us to that place,” Calderón Quevedo told the newspaper Noroeste.

According to local media figures, Sinaloa has accumulated a total of 1,435 intentional homicides between January and September 2025. However, if the period from September 2024 (when the security crisis erupted due to the confrontation between Los Chapitos and La Mayiza) is considered, the figure rises to 2,171 registered murders.
