What his coworkers considered a “practical joke” turned into a tragedy. Carlos Gurrola Arguijo, 47, a cleaning employee at the HEB shopping center in Senderos, Torreón, Coahuila, died after drinking degreaser that someone had put in his electrolyte bottle.

The death of Carlos, whom his loved ones called “El Papayita,” has shocked the community and highlighted an alleged case of workplace harassment that escalated to a deadly level.

According to his family’s testimony, Carlos was the target of constant mockery and abuse from his coworkers.

They hid his food, damaged his bicycle, and hid his cell phone, a pattern of harassment that culminated on August 30th, when he returned from his lunch break and took a sip of his drink.

He immediately tasted something strange and discarded the bottle, but the poison had already been ingested. His health deteriorated rapidly, and 19 days after the incident, he died at IMSS Clinic 71.

The family reported that the company failed to provide immediate medical attention and that they were notified of the accident almost three hours after it happened, forcing them to take him to the Red Cross on their own.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the bottle containing the substance was thrown away by a coworker, eliminating key evidence for the investigation.

The Coahuila State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to clarify the events. Authorities have requested video recordings from the scene and are gathering testimony to determine those responsible.

Meanwhile, Carlos’s family is demanding justice so that his death does not go unpunished. The case has generated a wave of solidarity on social media, where “El Papayita” is fondly remembered for his tragic end.
