The Mexican Navy confirmed that the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, known as the “Ambassador and Knight of the Seas,” suffered an accident in the port of New York during a departure maneuver.
The incident, which occurred during the “Bicentennial of the Consolidation of Independence at Sea” Training Cruise, resulted in a collision with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing significant damage to the vessel and leaving two crew members dead and 22 injured. According to the official report, 11 of the injured are in critical condition, while nine are stable.
In this regard, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed her condolences through her social media account, deeply regretting the loss of the two crew members.
“We deeply regret the loss of two crew members of the Training Ship Cuauhtémoc, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in the port of New York. Our solidarity and support go out to their families,” he wrote.
The accident occurred while the ship was maneuvering to depart the port as part of its training mission. According to the Navy, the damage sustained by the vessel will prevent it from continuing its scheduled training cruise.
The institution also indicated that the necessary steps are being taken to ensure the well-being of the crew members and to keep the families of those affected informed.
