Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, addressed a message recently shared by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in which he expressed his concern regarding the situation facing the population of Cuba due to the economic blockade imposed by the United States government.

During an event held this Sunday, March 15, in Compostela—in the state of Nayarit—the President also noted that the former head of state had invited the people of Mexico to make financial contributions to send aid to the Caribbean nation.

In the face of criticism from the opposition regarding López Obrador’s statement, Sheinbaum defended his stance, asserting that his message represents a gesture of solidarity.

“Our adversaries went crazy. They asked: ‘How is it possible that he came out to speak about a brother nation?’ Well, how could he *not* speak about a brother nation? Do you know what that speaks to? It speaks to the greatness of the heart—and it is grounded in the greatness of the hearts of the Mexican people,” she stated.

The President also reiterated that her administration would continue to provide support to Cuba and affirmed that anyone wishing to join the aid effort is welcome to do so.
“Whoever wishes to offer support, let them support,” she concluded.

On Saturday, March 14, 2026, López Obrador interrupted his retirement to invite citizens to make financial donations in support of the Cuban population through a Banorte account held by the civil association *Humanidad con América Latina* (Humanity with Latin America).

The account was established by citizens, writers, and journalists; according to AMLO, the donated funds will be used to purchase food, medicine, diesel, and gasoline.
