The persistent presence of firearms and explosives, as well as cell phones and fights inside the Aguaruto Penitentiary in Culiacán, Sinaloa, has resulted in the intensification of security operations within the facility.
The most recent episode of violence occurred on October 17, when a fight led to the death of one inmate and left three others injured.
According to the state Public Security Secretariat, three long weapons, two handguns, and an explosive device were seized during the containment operation. It should be noted that this is not an isolated incident, as on June 26, a shootout was reported inside the prison, resulting in one death and three injuries, all of them inmates.
Just a month earlier, another shooting at the same prison prompted a search in which firearms, ammunition, and communication equipment were seized.
Separately, earlier this year, an armed confrontation occurred that left no one injured or dead. However, the state governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, asserted that it was due to a possible dispute between the Sinaloa Cartel criminal cells, “Los Chapos” and “Los Mayos,” to maintain control within the facility.
